Bethel A.M.E. Church - Plainfield, IN

Bethel A.M.E. Church in Plainfield, Indiana was founded in 1867 in Plainfield by a group that came from Bethel A.M.E. Church in Indianapolis, IN. It was founded in a former blacksmith shop and worshiped in a small wood frame building until the 1960's when the Bethel, Plainfield's Chancel Chorus recorded a gospel record and traveled around singing songs and selling the record to raise money to buy the land to build the present edifice which is located at 302 North Vine Street, burning the mortgage in the 1980's.

Bethel, Plainfield maintains its musical roots with an annual Christmas Eve musical celebration that draws families and musicians from around the Plainfield, IN community. Bethel, Plainfield has long been a family church with strong membership from the families who lived in the neighborhood around the church and pays tribute to those families with family tribe flags in the sanctuary.

The church was a longstanding member of the North District of the Indiana Annual Conference until it was redistricted into the South District in 2016. Members at Bethel, Plainfield have made significant contributions in service to their Presiding Elder District, Indiana Annual Conference, the Fourth Episcopal District, and have served as officers at the Connectional Church.
